FUN RUNNERS formed a sea of pink at the weekend to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Around 2,400 women gathered in Stanmer Park, Brighton, on Sunday for the Race for Life Pretty Muddy 5k event, with support from friends and family as the sun came out just in time for the start of the race.

It followed Saturday’s Race for Life 5k and 10k races that also took place in the park with around 1,300 people turning up to participate.

Most runners wore pink and many were decked out in fancy dress, including cowboy hats and pink wigs.

Many were taking part in the fundraiser in memory of a relative, friend or work colleague who had passed away, while others were doing it to mark their own survival from the disease.

Sarah Jane-Winding, area events manager for Race for Life in Brighton, said: “We are so proud of all the women who have turned out in Brighton for the events.

“There was pink all around at yesterday’s muddy race.

“All of the ladies involved have done so well.

“The women we saw crossing the line were absolutely plastered in mud.

“The crowd has been great in cheering on all of the runners and keeping them motivated.

“It is a real community focused event.

“The atmosphere has been amazing and it looked like they were all having the best time ever.

“It is all for such a great cause and we are looking forward to coming back here for the next event.”

Most of the runners looked as though they had just returned from Glastonbury as they left Stanmer Park after finishing the obstacle course.

They had to contend with slippery slides and muddy pits as they made their way around the course.

Marshals and dedicated volunteers lined the park, keeping the event running smoothly and safely.

Melanie Waller, who has been volunteering at Race for Life events for five years, said: “I just thrive off the excitement of it all and it is a great vibe, with everyone here for the same reason.

“Race for Life really is an exceptional event on behalf of a great charity that does so much good.

“It really brings people together. I just love it.”

Cancer Research UK is hoping to raise a total of £200,000 from the weekend of fundraising events in Brighton.

Race for Life events have also been held in Worthing, Eastbourne, Hastings and Crawley.
