TODAY we turn the spotlight once again on Sussex Police and the mistakes made in the investigation into callous killer Robert Trigg.

Trigg is the Worthing man jailed for life last week for killing two of his girlfriends.

He was convicted of the murder of one and the manslaughter of another.

The truth only came to life after the devastated family of Susan Nicholson launched a six-year campaign for justice.

The fact they had to do this is just shocking.

What right did Sussex Police have to put this family through such a shocking ordeal?

No right is the answer.

And an apology after the sentencing in court last week just wasn’t good enough.

It may have been what the police PR team advised but we are sure the public can see through it.

The response from Sussex Police simply wasn’t sufficient.

We have taken the decision today to name some of the officers involved in the original decisions not to prosecute Trigg.

It wasn’t a decision we took lightly.

But it was one we believe is in the public interest.

On another subject – but still involving Sussex Police – is the sheer terror residents in Peacehaven have had to put up with in recent months.

It was the subject of our front page yesterday, plus two pages of content inside, but even after all that the calls have continued to come in.

Much of this is about the public perception and the fear of crime.

The public are worried about crime and the police force in general. We deserve better.
