Matthew Rowney is a Sussex filmmaker and director. He co-founded Rowney Motion Pictures with his brother Michael in 2016

What is your favourite place in Sussex?

Nothing beats the comfort of your own home – it’s a quiet, peaceful area which is great for concentration.

What do you love most about living in Sussex?

Every town is so different, which opens up options when we look for filming locations. That, and the stunning landscapes – Tilgate Park, Borde Hill Gardens, the South Downs.

What advice do you have for your 12-year-old self?

I’d tell him to get your brother Michael involved with your films from the beginning; film is tough and it’s a blessing to have someone to run the race with.

What is your most valued possession?

Physically, my camera – it makes what we do possible – but really, our imaginations because without them life would be a lot less exciting.

What is your biggest regret?

This is probably quite clichéd but I try not to have regrets. Things go wrong but to paraphrase Batman Begins: we fall only so we can pick ourselves back up again.

What is your biggest fear?

Wasps. How can something so small be so vicious?

What is your proudest achievement?

It’s always great to win awards and shiny trophies, but screening I Am the Doorway at my first comic-con and winning four awards at the Superman Celebration Festival was particularly awesome. I’m also proud of pursuing our dream to become big-time filmmakers.

Which five people (living or dead) would you invite to your fantasy dinner party?

Steven Spielberg

Jim Carrey (who would likely steal the show)

James Cameron

Christopher Reeve

Sarah Michelle Gellar
