AN ILLUSTRATOR and the owners of a seafront pub are among those who have pledged to donate profits to a campaign to save the crumbling arches of Madeira Terraces.

Lisa Holdcroft, who gained a cult following when she illustrated the rise of the i360 tower in cartoons in 2015, will donate proceeds from a new artwork to the council’s crowdfunding campaign.

The Horatio pub on the Brighton Palace Pier will give £1 to the campaign for every sale of their new “Terraces” cocktail.

And a family fun-day fundraising event will take place on Sunday August 20 at the site of the Peter Pan playground to add pledges to the campaign’s coffers.

Online, fans have expressed their hope these new initiatives will boost the campaign, which may have stalled slightly in recent days.

Lisa Holdcroft said on Facebook: “I have always loved Madeira Drive and Terrace.

“I am selling giclee prints and greetings cards of this image, and for the whole length of the crowd-funding campaign, I will donate £5 per print and 50p per card, sold through my website.”

She told The Argus: “I think the terraces are great, and it’s a shame they’ve been left to go but it’s difficult because they don’t bring in revenue on their own. But this might encourage people to show more interest.

“It’s a place where lots of happy memories are made, with races ending there, and the burning of the clocks, and the children’s parade.”

On July 26, council leader Warren Morgan launched the crowdfunding campaign to raise £432,000 as a proof-of-concept initiative to restore a small section of the arches.

The full restoration would cost £24million but Cllr Morgan’s aim was to show the city’s support for its heritage and to put Brighton and Hove in a stronger position to apply for further grants.

He said: “It will be a show of affection and intention of backing for getting the terraces restored, not just for aesthetic reasons but to serve a purpose.”

After the first 24 hours the campaign had broken records at crowdfunding site Spacehive, and within five days, more than 400 backers had pledged in excess of £11,000 between them, to add to the £100,000 pledged by the council.

However by yesterday afternoon with another week gone, the campaign only had a gross total of £115, 537 from 519 backers. That leaves £316,846 to be raised by the campaign deadline of November 26.

It means the public have so far pledged one-twentieth of the total we need to contribute, to make the campaign a success and trigger an additional £1m contribution from i360 funds.
