NEIGHBOURS told how they heard screaming and saw a woman lying on the floor bleeding after a suspected stabbing this morning.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene in Highdown, Southwick, at around 9am.

Witnesses said they saw next door neighbours run to the aid of a woman lying bleeding on the grass in middle of the crescent-shaped close to try and help her until the ambulance arrived.

Others told how they awoke to find their residential street, which houses several young families, full of police.

The Argus understands one woman was stabbed and possibly another sustained a head injury in the incident. They are believed to be recovering in hospital after treatment but police have been unable to confirm any information at this time.

Officers moved to reassure residents this afternoon by telling them it was an isolated incident involving a specific household and it was not a random attacker.

It is unclear whether the attacker has been apprehended.

Sussex Police said a man had been arrested for grievous bodily harm and was currently in custody.
