One of Brighton’s premier boutique hotel, Drakes, is on a roll with three prestigious national accolades this month, writes Nick Mosley

The Restaurant at Drakes has received deserved recognition for quality and high standards in the Good Food Guide 2018.

Drakes was awarded the highest score given to any Brighton restaurant again this year, making this its ninth consecutive year in the respected “bible” of UK fine dining.

This significant achievement is described in the guide as “exact cooking techniques and a degree of ambition; showing balance and depth of flavour in dishes”.

The accolade was clearly attributed to the talent, flair and creative skill of Andy Vitez, who was promoted to head chef two years ago after five years as sous chef.

He has taken the restaurant to new levels of excellence.

The Bar at Drakes was shortlisted in the Imbibe awards for Gin List of the Year. Given the popularity gin is currently receiving across the UK, getting on to the Imbibe list quite a feat.

The list at Drakes is comprehensive, including local gins and a selection from around the world.

Bartender Tom Gabb, also relatively new to Drakes, brought a breath of fresh air with his knowledge, passion and friendly disposition when he started just over a year ago.

He was recently shortlisted in the Black Cow Vodka International competition.

The Bar at Drakes is enjoying a surge of new guests as Tom’s reputation sets new standards in the city.

Apart from the excellence of the food and drink offering, it is the luxurious guest rooms Drakes is best known for.

Perhaps the most romantic in Brighton – with hand-made beds and stunning sea views – it is no wonder the four-star boutique hotel has been shortlisted as a finalist in The Best Place to Sleep in this year’s Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Awards announced this week. The finals will be held in early November.

General manager Richard Hayes said: “We are absolutely delighted Drakes has received these three accolades in such close succession. This highlights the excellence of each department which has made Drakes one of the top hotels in Brighton.

“The accolades are a tribute to the accomplishments and commitment of our hard working, dedicated teams and it’s wonderful to have them recognised once again.”
