HUNDREDS of bikers took part in a charity ride yesterday.

The annual Brightona event saw hundreds of bikers converge on Madeira Drive.

The event is Sussex’s answer to America’s Daytona classic motorbike festival.

Held in Madeira Drive, it welcomes petrol-head bikers from across the UK.

Visitors and residents watched as bikers made their way in to the city on all manner of two-wheeled vehicles, from mopeds and scooters to roaring Harley Davidsons, trikes and hotrods.

Now in its 13th year it’s possible the poor weather put many off from attending.

Theraphim Hebraeorum said on Facebook: “What a shame the weather put the mockers on the event. Least well attended I have seen for years. The charity must have taken a hit this year. “

Over the years the event has raised more than £150,000 for the Sussex Heart Charity.

Organisers said: “There was lots of live music, trade stalls, competitions, bikes, hotrods, trikes, scooters and more.

“Thousands of people flooded in to Brighton, whether they were bike enthusiasts, love a bit of rock and roll or just enjoying a day out with friends and family.”

The Sussex Heart Charity was started in 1978 to support local research and community resuscitation training.

The Argus launched its Save a Life campaign together with Sussex Heart towards the end of 2015 in a bid to get more defibrillators available in the community.

It called on hotels, schools, clubs, charities and businesses to pledge to install one of the life-saving machines.

More than 100 pledges were subsequently made, with large hotels including The Grand in Brighton and Hilton Brighton Metropole getting them installed.
