RESIDENTS were left flummoxed when no entry signs were installed at both ends of their road.

The signs were put up in Lincoln Street, Brighton, last week with the introduction of a one-way system in the residential road.

The blundering Brighton and Hove City Council workers put up no entry signs at both the Islingword Road and Southover Street entrances to the road.

The mistake was soon raised and the Southover Street sign was replaced with a blue, one-way except cycles sign.

It is the latest in a string confusing alterations to parking and the road system in the area in recent weeks.

Streets in Hanover, Elm Grove and Craven Vale are the last to lose unregulated parking in the city centre - a move that has caused much frustration for residents as they battle for parking permits and spaces.

Glen Dartnell, 45, of Lincoln Street, said it’s been a turbulent time for the area.

He said: “We now have to apply for permits, but I still don’t know where everyone is going to park.

“I used to park in a road further up the hill, but now there are even fewer spaces.

“It’s just going to get more difficult for everyone to park around here.”

Lincoln Street is just one of the roads in Hanover being made a one-way street as part of the new parking zones.

Where before there had been parking available on both sides, double yellow lines have been painted to prevent people from parking along one side of the road.

Meanwhile, residents have been struggling to get hold of permits due to a faulty online application system.

Controlled parking in the area had been scheduled to start in the area last Monday. However, it was delayed while the parking signs were installed.

Many residents still feel confused by the new system. Frank Lawrenson, also of Lincoln Street, said: “Nobody knows what’s going on at all. It’s a mystery.”

When The Argus asked a traffic warden on duty, even he said he did not know when the new parking zones were being enforced.

A council spokesman said: “We are extending the issuing of warning notices in zones I, S and V until Sunday 15 October. We are giving all permit holders an additional two weeks’ grace period after the expiry of three month or annual permit. This means you won’t be paying any extra for the delays.”
