AUTHOR and artist Chris Riddell will illustrate a new edition of a JK Rowling novel.

The Brighton-based children’s laureate is set to work with the Harry Potter author on a reimagined version of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, a spin-off to the Potter series.

The original book was published in 2008.

The new edition is to be released on October 2, 2018, with all proceeds going towards Ms Rowling’s charity Lumos.

Mr Riddell said that it was an “immense honour” and “hugely exciting” to be turning his hand to one of the most successful literary franchises ever.

Speaking about the collection of stories, he said: “These fairy tales are vivid and beautifully crafted and will resonate in the sumptuous format Bloomsbury have given me.”

The new version of The Tales of Beedle the Bard comes with footnotes from Albus Dumbledore, one of the most respected figures in Ms Rowling’s wizarding world. Mr Riddell said that he had already begun researching these notes and was excited to illustrate them.

He said: “The true joy has been to discover the richness and texture of Dumbledore’s footnotes. I can’t wait to pull on my robes and begin my tenure as a supply teacher at Hogwarts.”

The edition will be published by Bloomsbury, whose children’s publishing director Rebecca McNally praised Riddell as a “once-in-a-lifetime-talent”.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard is first mentioned in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the final novel of the series, when Dumbledore leaves the book to Hermione Granger.
