Many of your readers may be unaware that lifting the ban on exports of British beef has allowed the trade of live young calves from the UK to resume.
Thousands of calves are now exported to Europe. This makes a mockery of the demonstrations in Shoreham (where one protester lost her life), instrumental in bringing in the ban in the first place.
Scientific evidence shows that the young animals, some just two weeks old, suffer greatly during transportation.
Once on the continent they are taken to cruel veal units and reared in conditions that would be illegal in the UK, for example in tiny units without bedding or slatted floors.
Readers can help these unfortunate animals by urging their MP to sign early day motion 395, calling on the Government to take action on this issue. They can also buy Soil Association approved organic milk, which ensures calves are not exported to the continent for veal production.
