CYCLISTS are being invited to take part in project to learn how they can stay safer near buses and other large vehicles.

Brighton and Hove Buses has got together with Brighton and Hove City Council, East Sussex Fire and Rescue and Sussex Police to offer cyclists a chance to sit in the cab of a double decker bus and see for themselves what a driver can and cannot see when a cyclist is moving towards them.

Ed Knight, of Brighton and Hove Buses, said the event has already been run successfully at the University of Sussex with a firefighter as a cyclist to illustrate the dangers on the road.

“This is the second of these events. We held one up at Sussex University and it was a huge success. Dozens of students and lecturers took turns to sit in the cab while my colleague Darren Eaton from the fire service cycled towards the bus: first cutting in behind it and then moving towards the front on the off-side.

He said: “It’s such a powerful demonstration of the areas around the bus where the driver has good and – more importantly – poor visibility that I believe it can save lives.”

The demonstration will take place on Friday, December 8 from 10am to 2pm outside the Royal Pavilion in New Road near the Theatre Royal.
