Mason Crane will make his Ashes debut in the fifth and final Test in Sydney after Chris Woakes was ruled out due to injury.
The 20-year-old leg-spinner from Worthing steps in after Woakes underwent scans for a side injury, having played little part in net practice on Tuesday afternoon.
Woakes, 28, a regular across all formats and part of the one-day international squad to face Australia after the end of the Ashes, suffered a torn side in the first match of England's Champions Trophy campaign six months ago.
Crane, who plays his county cricket for Hampshire after being let go by Sussex as a schoolboy, was in the running for a place in the Boxing Day Test.
New Sussex coach Jason Gillespie said ahead of the Melbourne contest that England should be seriously considering giving him a go.
He now joins the line-up on a wicket skipper Joe Root believes could suit his talents.
