PEOPLE are being warned against bogus bailiffs operating in their area.

Brighton and Hove City Council’s council tax team has had reports of people claiming to be enforcement agents from the county court.

They are calling residents and asking them to make an immediate payment to a bank account they provide.

The council says this is a scam as council enforcement agents, previously known as bailiffs, do not make phone calls directly to customers unless pre-arranged.

If they do visit a property in the city, they will be happy to provide an identity card.

They will also be able to give documentation to verify the reason for their visit.

If a customer has any doubt about the validity of any caller they should phone 01273 291900.

Anyone who has had one of the phone calls should contact Sussex Police.
