A baby has been killed and four people have been injured in a car crash.

The seven-month-old girl was a passenger in a car involved in the crash at Newpound Common, near Wisborough Green, west of Billingshurst.

Police were alerted around 4.17pm to a collision on the B2133 at Newpound, between a Mazda 3 and a Vauxhall Corsa. 

The baby was taken to Worthing Hospital, but died at 6.36pm. 

A five-year-old boy was airlifted to St George's Hospital in London, where he remained on Wednesday evening in a critical condition. 

The children were passengers in the Mazda. 

A 27-year-old woman passenger suffered serious leg injuries and was taken to hospital in London. 

The 31-year-old driver suffered minor injuries. 

All occupants of the Mazda were from Pulborough. 

The driver of the Corsa, a 36-year-old man from Pulborough, suffered serious chest injuries and was taken to Worthing Hospital. 

Sussex Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone who saw the vehicles being driven shortly before the crash to call 101 quoting Operation Gilford. 

The road was closed during the rescue and police collision investigation, and reopened around 10pm.
