CAROLINE LUCAS has said it is “unthinkable” that a major art gallery is at risk of closure.
In a statement of support towards the beleaguered Fabrica, the MP for Brighton Pavilion emphasised the venue’s importance to the city.
It comes as Fabrica founders launched a crowd-funding campaign after seeing their budget slashed by Brighton and Hove City Council.
Ms Lucas said: “Fabrica plays such a vital role in bringing exciting, challenging and inspiring art to the city.
“It’s unthinkable that it’s at risk because of funding cuts when it so boldly and brilliantly makes art accessible, current and inspiring to residents and visitors in Brighton and Hove.”
Fabrica, which is in Duke Street, Brighton, also received backing from artist and photographer Martin Parr.
“I have great affection for Fabrica,” he said.
“They take the artist’s initial idea and help develop it and turn it into a reality, adding the magic touches that bring the whole project alive.”
The gallery’s regular grant of £20,000 from Brighton and Hove City Council was halted earlier this month, plunging its future into uncertainty.
Co-founder Liz Whitehead admitted the cuts could force Fabrica to close. “We may have to shut our doors,” she said.
