TODAY we continue our weekly focus on the Sussex Super Growth Awards, which recognise the fastest-growing businesses.

Their success will be celebrated at an awards event at the Amex Stadium at Falmer on March 8.

It is sponsored by asb law, Lloyds Bank and Kreston Reeves in partnership with The Argus.

Here we focus on two more successful finalists.

Cheesmur Building Contractors

FIRST established in 1936, Cheesmur Building Contractors has been based in Lewes since the 1960s.

Following a management buy-out in January 2009, the revitalised business has continued to improve and develop its team and, as a consequence, continues to enhance its reputation in the marketplace.

Operating throughout Sussex and the South East, Cheesmur employs more than 60 full-time staff, including management and administrative support from its Cobbe Barns offices in Beddingham.

Cheesmur undertakes construction projects from across a wide range of sectors, including residential, education, health, heritage, commercial, industrial and leisure, as well as a number of term planned and reactive maintenance contracts, with a significant proportion of turnover negotiated or secured on an open book basis.

Totally committed to the ethos of partnering and collaborative working, the company continues to work closely with its clients and their professional teams to ensure that quality projects are achieved to programme and budget.

Cheesmur projects include an upgrade to the historic Volks Railway on Marine Parade in Brighton

In addition to its own trained and skilled craftspeople, the company has a valuable resource in its established and experienced supply chain of sub-contractors and suppliers.

Cheesmur is firmly committed to the development and training of its own highly motivated staff and apprentices, who are encouraged to excel in their chosen trade.

The company is proud to have been a founding member of the Training and Apprenticeships in Construction Shared Apprenticeship Scheme and also continues to support training across the county as a member of the Construction Task Group which is a part of the local East Sussex Skills initiative.

Director Steve Hayman said: “We are delighted to be included as a finalist in the Sussex Super Growth Awards for the second year in a row.

“As a chartered building company, registered with Constructionline, CHAS and the Considerate Constructors Scheme, our business is based on the firm belief that every client has the right to a quality product at all times whilst being able to appreciate the construction experience.”

Southern Cranes and Access

FROM humble beginnings back in 1997, Southern Cranes and Access has steadily grown to become a leading provider of mobile crane hire, contract lifting services and powered access hire in London and the South East.

With staff levels recently reaching 100, the company operates a fleet of 50 mobile cranes, several lorry loaders, low loaders and more than 100 pieces of powered access equipment.

The business is committed to continued investment to both maintain and increase its asset portfolio with the most recent acquisition being a 450 ton Liebherr crane.

Southern Cranes and Access also operates a training centre where it is able to offer various industry-related courses.

These are open to both external clients and to train in-house staff. The company has recently acquired a new head office based in Southwater, Horsham and with additional locations around London and the Home Counties, it is able to service customers all over the South East of England.

Southern Cranes and Access is predominantly a family-run company with three generations working in the business, providing the perfect balance of youthful enthusiasm and grandfather experience.

In an industry where there is an increasing demand to provide safe and effective lifting solutions in increasingly complex environments, Southern Cranes and Access is totally committed to providing its customers with safe, reliable and well-maintained equipment operated by highly trained and competent operatives, backed up by high levels of customer service from its staff.
