STAFF and pupils at one of the city’s largest schools are overjoyed after boosting their Ofsted inspection result following a period of improvements.

Cardinal Newman Catholic School, in Hove, has now received a rating of good across all of the inspection categories after being told it required improvement as a result of the previous inspection.

The school’s new rating is the second highest available.

It has also achieved a rating of outstanding in the personal development and welfare category following the inspection between January 30-31.

The school’s headteacher, Dr James Kilmartin, said: “As you will see Ofsted now rate the school as good in every category.

“I believe that it presents a very fair and insightful view of the school.

“We are very proud of our school – our staff, governors, parents and students – and the hard work and fantastic support everyone puts in to make our school such a great place.

“We strive for the highest quality of learning and teaching that inspires us all to discover and develop our God-given gifts and talents and I am delighted that our school has been recognised for its achievements over the last few years.

“Please be assured that we will never take your support for granted and I promise that we will continue to work hard to make Cardinal Newman not just a good school but one of the best in the country.

“This report represents a milestone on our journey, not the destination.”

A total of 400 parents and carers of pupils took part in a survey and they were asked about various aspects of the school’s performance and the overall experience of its pupils.

Within the results, 89 per cent of parents said they think their child receives appropriate homework for their age.

The survey showed that 96 per cent of parents think their child is well looked after at this school.

All of the survey scores increased in comparison to one carried out in 2015/2016.

Dr Kilmartin said: “I would like to personally thank all of those parents and carers who took the time to fill out Parent View and/or provide a textual response.

“I was moved by many of the very supportive comments made and that 97 per cent of parents and carers who responded said that they would recommend Cardinal Newman Catholic School to another parent.”

Cardinal Newman is much bigger than the average secondary school with a total of 2,260 pupils on the school roll.
