More than 400 runners gathered in Hove Park for Parkrun.

Men, women, children, and even dogs, broke a sweat running the weekly timed run this morning (April 21).

Runners were blessed with good weather as they gathered on the start line at 9am, before making their way around the 5K course.

The gathering at Hove Park is one of many of Parkruns that take place across the Brighton and Hove and the rest of the country.

Runner Kate Meegan, 45, from Poets Corner, Hove, was among the 450-strong group taking part.

She said: “At Parkrun there is a great atmosphere and it is a good course.

“It is also a great way into other sporting events. I did a 10K last week and would not have done if I hadn’t have started with Parkrun.”

Behind Hove Park’s Parkrun is a team of 30 volunteers who marshal it and give runners their token at the finish line, which they can use to find out their time on the website.

Brighton and Hove Parkrun race director Bernie Kirrane said: “I think it attracts so many people because it is so inclusive.

“You’ll see we have some incredibly speedy runners - the course record is under 15 minutes - but also people can run at any speed, or walk or jog if they choose.

“People can also run with their children.”

There has been a Parkrun at Hove Park since 2007 and it was the fourth one in the country to be set up.

The event also takes place in Preston Park, Hove Promenade, Bevendean Down.

The first Parkrun was launched in 2004 in London.

Parkrun has now spread all over the world with events taking place in Australia, the United States, South Africa and Singapore.

Parkrun Ltd keeps their runs free by making money from brands who market at events.
