TWO men have been arrested after a man suffered serious head injuries during a suspected road rage incident.

Officers were called to London Road in Brighton at around 7.50pm on Saturday following an altercation between the occupants of two vehicles.

One of the men got out of his vehicle and approached the second car and both a verbal and physical altercation then took place near the Co-Op store on the road.

A 37-year-old man from London was hit in the head with, what police believe to be a steering wheel lock.

He suffered serious but not life threatening or life changing head injuries and was taken to hospital.

Staff at the Subway store nearby said customers reported seeing the cordon being set up at the scene and that they saw one of the men who was arrested being put in handcuffs.

Mohammed Haque, a shopkeeper in London Road, said a group of people appeared to be fighting outside the supermarket.

The 37-year-old said: “One was very badly injured on the top of his head and seemed to have been hit with something.

“They were bleeding on the main road.

“The police came, as well as two ambulances.

“The police were there for hours, with four police cars on the road.

“There were a lot of people watching.

“There is a lot of traffic on this road. We get a lot of incidents here.”

A member of staff at the Co-op, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "It cracked his head open and he bled everywhere.

"There were security guards from Mcdonald's who ran over and sorted it out."

A 39-year-old man from London has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent.

A 37-year-old from London was also arrested on suspicion of affray.

Both men remain in custody at this time and the investigation is ongoing.

Detective Sergeant Donna Ward, of Sussex Police, said: “This was an isolated incident between two vehicles.

“The two cars were involved in a road rage incident and this has subsequently lead to a physical altercation.

“We believe there was a bus going past the two vehicles at the time of the incident.

“We are appealing for anyone on that bus or members of the public walking past to come forward with any information they may have.”
