DEVELOPERS aiming to transform a town’s infrastructure have slammed proposals to build an incinerator.

Britaniacrest Recycling, a waste management company, plans to build a 24-hour facility in Langhurstwood Road, Horsham, which would focus on recycling and producing renewable energy.

The proposed facility would be located right next to the site on which Liberty Property Trust intends to build 2,750 homes, schools, green spaces and a business park, causing the firm to object to Britaniacrest’s plans.

Liberty said: “We submit that this proposed facility would result in significant adverse effects on this allocation, both on the new housing, and also the proposed high quality business park.

“We also submit that the pre-application public consultation was inadequate.

“We conclude that the development is not compliant with many adopted planning policies, and would cause significant harm which would not be outweighed by any benefits of the scheme.”

The 25-page document submitted to West Sussex County Council by Liberty highlighted its main concerns with the proposals – possible pollution affecting residents, the size of the building, which would include a 95m chimney, and potential traffic problems.

Hundreds of objections have been submitted since the planning application was listed.

Residents campaigning as a group called No Incinerator 4 Horsham are looking to gather 3,000 signatures for a petition against the plans.

More than 50 residents attended a public meeting held by North Horsham Parish Council last week, who raised similar concerns as Liberty about the plans.

A parish council spokeswoman said: “The council listened to what the local residents had to say. There were a lot of concerns about of variety of things.

“These included the size and mass of the proposed building, the health aspects, concerns about noise and light pollution and that waste may be coming from other areas to the incinerator.”

The parish council’s planning committee met on Thursday night to discuss the application.

The council spokeswoman added that the parish council strongly objects to the plans because of the size of the proposed building and the “detrimental effect” it could have on the surrounding area.

Britaniacrest said the plant will be designed to not produce more pollutants than is allowed and that it would not be a risk to residents’ health.
