WITH the second largest population of Jedi warriors in the country, Brighton’s believers in the force are pulling out all the stops to celebrate Star Wars Day today.

According to the 2011 census, Jedi Knights make up almost one per cent of the city’s population, with the so-called alternative religion attracting more than 2,500 followers.

Fans of the sci-fi film series can spend today celebrating the occasion by dressing up as their favourite character or making plans to attend forthcoming Star Wars themed events.

Mark Bulbeck, who has put together an exhibition of Star Wars memorabilia currently on display at Hove Museum, has collected figurines since he was a child.

The 45-year-old, from Hangleton, said: “It has been a big part of my childhood and I feel that toys are something that provide the earliest memories of your childhood you have.

“I kept on and by the late 1980s or 1990s I was still collecting.

“It is exciting to see different generations of people that are interested in it.

“I am surprised by the census figures.

“I would have to classify myself as a Jedi Knight too.

“How could I not after people see my display of figures?”

The 2011 census found there were nearly 180,000 people in England and Wales who identify as Jedis.

There are plenty of Star Wars themed events coming up for fans to enjoy, including Jedi training sessions and a human- sized Mario Karts Vs Star Wars event at Brighton Fringe.

The pedal grand prix races will take place on Hove Lawns on May 19, with Jedis and Sith Lords competing with plumbers and princesses.

The Stag Company will be bringing its Jedi training sessions to Brighton this summer, which will see groups learn all about the force and how to wield a lightsaber from a Jedi master.

The company is now taking bookings for sessions later this year.
