An Art Deco lido building is set to be restored to its former glory after £100,000 was pledged via a crowdfunding page.

The pool at Saltdean Lido, which originally opened in 1938, was revamped and re-opened last year.

Now the building that provides the modernist background to the lido will undergo the same treatment.

Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company, which was set up by residents to run the lido, secured a 60-year lease from Brighton and Hove City Council in 2013.

In order to go ahead with phase two, renovation of the building, it needed to raise £100,000 before the end of May to try to secure £4.2 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund and £700,000 from Brighton and Hove City Council.

More than 1,200 people contributed to the crowdfunding page but it was the Regency Society, an organisation which campaigns to preserve heritage buildings in Brighton and Hove, that promised to donate the final £7,000.

Chairman of the Regency Society Roger Hinton said: “Restoration of the Saltdean Lido site is one of Brighton and Hove’s most important heritage projects.

“The Saltdean Lido Trust has already brought the pool back into use and is now turning its attention to the main building which is in urgent need of restoration.

“The Regency Society is pleased to be able to support the project.

“We believe that it will not only save a fine building but also create an important asset for the local community.”

In its first summer season since re-opening, Saltdean Lido welcomed 37,000 visitors and won two Brighton and Hove Business Awards, one for Best New Kid on the Block and the other for Best Hospitality, Leisure and Tourism.

Deryck Chester, one of the volunteer directors of Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company, said: “The design of the building is optimistic and, with war pending at the time it was designed, it was all about looking to the future. It looks like something out of a Poirot set.

“We want to create a commercial space, heritage cafe and wedding venue, bringing it into the 21st century.”
