A SHAKEN woman has described how she screamed as a supermarket delivery lorry crashed through iron railings towards her basement flat window.

The Tesco vehicle was parked on Ditchling Rise, Brighton, on Wednesday evening while the driver was making deliveries when it suddenly started moving towards the railings.

A woman living in the flat, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “I heard shouting from outside, so went to my window.

“Then I heard a massive crunch, so I backed away and screamed as I watched as the nose of the truck came towards me and the basement flat window.

“I thought it had been run off the road by something. It was just about stalled by the bay window angle of the wall. The railings and a bike outside were destroyed.”

The driver was not in the vehicle at the time of the incident and The Argus has been told the lorry’s handbrake failed, causing it to start rolling on its own towards the basement flat.

“I was positioned by the window, looking out when the lorry dropped,” said the resident of the flat.

“It was awful, I genuinely thought there must have been a pile up.

“I’m so glad no one was hurt.”

Witness Matthew Davids posted a picture of the lorry on Facebook later that evening with the caption “When Tesco takes 'delivery right to your doorstep' a little too seriously.”

The woman, who had been faced with the lorry crashing through the railings above her living room window, thanked Matthew on social media for his help and said she “felt much better now.”

An Eastbourne-based recovery company came to pull the lorry out at around 10pm on Wednesday evening.

The council has since installed a temporary railing at the site of the incident as a safety measure.

Tesco said: "We are relieved that no one was hurt. We are sorry for the damage that was caused and are working with the home owner to get it fixed as soon as possible."
