CALLS have been made for a crackdown on fly-tippers after large quantities of commercial-looking waste spilled on to the streets.

Councillor Dawn Barnett, who represents Hangleton and Knoll, said the problem would persist unless the council took a harder line.

Brighton and Hove City Council has previously investigated and prosecuted large-scale fly-tipping through their contractors 3GS, but Cllr Barnett says that small-scale littering is causing just as much of a nuisance.

She sent The Argus photographs of boxes which clearly show the names of the addressees, in Aldrington Place, and said there was a similar mess outside a nearby nursery and near sheltered accommodation for the elderly.

She said: “My residents are very upset about it.

“It’s only a few people that spoil it for everyone else.

“It’s making the place look such a mess.

“Unless the council starts fining people, and naming and shaming, it will just keep happening.”

Littering is contracted to 3GS, who in the first six months of their contract issued 480 fines for dropping cigarette ends but only five for littering and 21 for fly-tipping.

A council spokeswoman said: “It is against the law for residents, businesses or visitors to flytip waste rather than disposing of it responsibly. This includes leaving bulky waste items beside bins instead of taking them to the tip.

“We work closely with 3GS to ensure that fines are issued correctly and fairly, in line with government guidelines, when the law is broken.”
