HE established the BBC Symphony Orchestra and became its chief conductor before being forced to leave when he reached retirement age.

Sir Adrian Boult, born in 1889, became director of music for the BBC in 1930, and upon leaving in 1950 he became chief conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

He stepped down from the post in 1959, but continued conducting concerts until he retired in 1981.

He died in 1983 at the age of 93.
