Shoppers witnessed a commotion in a supermarket which ended with a suspect being led away in handcuffs.
Police were called to Morrisons in St James's Street in Brighton shortly before 5pm on Friday.
A witness said there were crowds of people near the door after the incident, along with a police car.
It was reported that the man had "five police around him" and may have been carrying a knife.
One witness said: "A grey Vauxhall was driving at high speed into East Street and braked sharply in front of Days Buffet.
"A white man in his late 20s got out of the car and ran on foot. Police soon followed. After a chase across Steine Gardens police finally caught their suspect inside Morrisons."
He was led inside the store and taken upstairs in the lift before being taken away.
