A GUITAR shop is supporting a world record attempt as 450 guitarists gather to play Heroes by David Bowie and raise money for Brain Tumour Research.

Brighton’s Guitar, Amp and Keyboard Centre are donating a Fender Squier Bullet Strat guitar to a raffle that will run alongside the record attempt, which is taking place at the Ealing Blues Festival on July 22.

Alex Naylor Davis, retail manager at the guitar shop, which is situated in North Road, said: “I lost a cousin to a brain tumour, she was 19.

“She insisted on completing her exams and earned a place at St Andrews University, but passed away just before Christmas last year.

“It’s such a worthy cause and we are delighted to be involved in raising as much money as possible.”

He added: “David Bowie was an absolute genius and Heroes is, arguably, his most poignant song, so it’s a fitting tribute.”

Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer and 16,000 people are diagnosed in the UK each year.

Roy Chudobskyi, guitar shop manager at Guitar, Amp and Keyboard Centre, added: “When we heard about the world record attempt, we instantly wanted to be involved and we are so pleased to be.

“Four hundred and fifty musicians with electric guitars playing ‘Heroes’ en masse is going to be incredible and, as it’s also for such a great cause, we’re determined to make it happen.”

The guitarists will be accompanied with vocals provided by Scott Fuller, lead singer of tribute band The Thin White Duke.

Scott said: “David Bowie’s ‘Heroes’ is about a triumph of hope over adversity and seems the perfect song choice.

“It will be an honour to be part of it and we hope that many more musicians will think the same and sign up to the event.”

Guitarists can register for the event via Eventbrite and the ticket price includes a donation to Brain Tumour Research and entitles participants to a new Blackstar Fly 3 micro amp, a T-shirt and a free day’s entry to the Ealing Blues Festival.

The cost of taking part is £40 or £25 if you have your own amp.
