BARRISTERS normally spend their days in courts presenting the case before a judge or jury.
But the team from chambers 1 Crown Office Row in Brighton has staged its eighth annual beach volleyball tournament raising funds for children’s charity Rockinghorse.
It was held at Yellowave’s seafront beach sports venue in Madeira Drive, Brighton.
The charity event is dedicated to the memory of Ghulam Hussain who practised as a barrister at 1 Crown Office Row in Brighton and died unexpectedly in 2015.
Seventeen teams from the Sussex business community made the most of the heatwave going head to head to compete for the Ghulam Hussain Cup.
Following a tense final, the team from Coole Bevis LLP was crowned the winners.
The event raised £2,550 for Rockinghorse, bringing the total raised from the volleyball tournament over the past eight years to almost £18,000.
As the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton, funds raised will be donated to the charity’s projects supporting sick children at the Alex, including the current ventilator appeal for the high dependency unit.
Organiser James Hart, first junior clerk at 1 Crown Office Row, said: “We are delighted to have raised £2,550 for Rockinghorse children’s charity.
“Our thanks go to all the firms who participated with so much enthusiasm in support of this worthy cause.”
Terrina Barnes, corporate fundraising manager at Rockinghorse, said: “ “We are ever so grateful to 1 Crown Office Row in Brighton for its continued support.
“The Ghulam Hussain Cup is always such a great event and it’s wonderful to see it so well supported year after year.
“Thank you to everyone involved for raising a fantastic amount of money for the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital.”
Rockinghorse is a Brighton-based charity that has been supporting children in Sussex for more than 50 years.
It was set up in 1967 by Dr Trevor Mann, who recognised there was a real need for additional resources to improve healthcare services for sick children and babies.
The charity is a vital supporter of the neighbouring Trevor Mann Baby Unit.
It strives to make services stimulating, cutting-edge and accessible for the many children, babies and young people who need them.
