RESIDENTS are furious after a group of travellers arrivef at Ringmer Village Green..

Residents claimed more than 20 caravans and cars have camped across the cricket pitch and next to the children’s playground.

One woman, who asked not to be named, said: “They were on the green for two days, two weeks ago.

“But they returned on Monday and they have caused so much trouble since they arrived.

"They need to be moved on as soon as possible.

“I’ve never seen travellers coming to the Green before.

“The police issued them a notice to leave on Monday but they kept coming.

“They are driving around the green and wrecking the grass with tyre marks.

“Our MP Maria Caulfield is dealing with it.

“The green is a big open space so that’s why they love it there.

“I think the council should install bollards to protect the green."

Green Councillor Johnny Denis, representing Ouse Valley and Ringmer, wrote on Facebook: “Traveller update. Section 61 has been issued and the travellers have to leave by 5pm today (Wednesday).

“Thank you to Police and Parish Council, and East Sussex County Council.

“Let’s get a plan in place to prevent this from happening in the future.”

Conservative MP for Lewes, Ms Caulfield, wrote on Facebook: “Sussex Police have now issued a Section 61 notice and all travellers were told to leave Ringmer by Wednesday afternoon.”

A Lewes District Council spokeswoman said: “Sussex Police served a Section 61 notice on ten caravans parked near the cricket pavilion in Ringmer at 12.16pm on Wednesday with notice to leave by 5pm.

"Officers from Lewes District Council have been working closely with Sussex Police, Ringmer Parish Council and East Sussex County Council’s Traveller Liaison Group since the arrival of the caravans.”
