A CAR went up in flames on the M23 this afternoon.
Firefighters were called to the motorway northbound at junction nine, near Gatwick Airport, at 4.30pm.
The road was blocke and traffic was brought to a standstill as emergency services dealt with it.
West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service firefighters were called to assist their Surrey colleagues, and crews have now stepped down.
A fire service spokeswoman said the cause of the fire was accidental ignition.
