OLD FRIENDS brought the spirit of the Mods back to the seafront for their annual reunion.

There were scores of people in their Parka coats, which helped as the weather turned rainy yesterday.

Seafront strollers could see an array of old Lambretta scooters, adorned with lights, mirrors and badges that have become the hallmark of Mod culture.

Brighton is one of the focal points for the groups, as it was the top seafront destination during the original movement during the 1960s, with battles on the beach between groups of Mods and rockers.

Then in 1979 the film Quadrophenia helped spark a revival in Mod culture, with Phil Daniels and a host of other British actors launching their careers from Brighton.

Among those who had travelled were Andy Read, known as Readie, and Barry Johnson from Maidstone in Kent. Barry was an original Mod from the 1960s, and said Brighton is the “hub” of Mod culture.

Meanwhile Readie enjoys looking at the scooters and meeting friends to have a chat. “I love the music, the dress, and the culture,” he said.

Susan Coster was inspired by the mod revival and has been riding her scooter since 1979. She travelled from London for the weekend. She said: “There is an awesome atmosphere with nice people, and whatever the weather we make the most of it.”

Des Watson rode for four hours from Hemel Hempstead to get to Brighton yesterday, and said he enjoys the city’s nightlife and meeting up with friends.
