THE family of a 20-year-old killed in a car crash have paid tribute to a man who “had the world at his feet”.

Joe Higgins, from Brighton, died at the scene of the collision on the B2112 near Ditchling late on Sunday after smashing into a tree.

The former Cardinal Newman school pupil, who had a passion for driving modified cars, was on his way to friend Patrick Forster’s house when he died.

Today we reported Patrick, along with other friends of Joe’s, gathered at the scene and said their tragic pal was “like a brother to us”.

Now Joe’s family – mum Chris, dad Tom and sister Ellen, who live in Craignair Avenue, Patcham – have paid tribute to him.

A family statement said: “Joe lived his life to the full.

“He had a passion for cars and always dreamed of buying a Volkswagen Mk1 Caddy.

“He also had a love for the outdoors – he was in the Scouts until he was 18 and he was in the process of obtaining his gold Duke of Edinburgh award, and he had plans to explore Europe by Interrail.

“Our boy was a fully qualified carpenter, and he loved his profession, as well as all his colleagues old and new. He had the world at his feet.”

Joe studied carpentry at Greater Brighton Metropolitan College (formerly City College) and was working in the trade.

Flowers and heartfelt tributes have been left at the scene of his death, and on Monday night a memorial service was held by friends at Black Rock on Brighton seafront, where Joe would hang out with mates.

No other vehicle was involved in the crash, which happened at about 11pm, and Joe did not have any passengers in his black Volkswagen Golf.

His friends said they believe he may have swerved out the way of an animal in the road judging by the tyre marks in the road and on the grass.

Joe’s family echoed what his friends said about his humour, saying he was a “great laugh”.

The statement said: “He had aspirations to be a dad and to play with his favourite toys from his childhood with his kids.

“He also wanted to find someone he loved and to love them fiercely forever.

“With a huge heart and a great laugh, Joe loved everyone he met, and they adored him. His amazing sense of humour and lovable nature was what everyone needed in their life.

“Joe loved not only his family but all of his friends too.”
