AN ALBION defender will appear in court today charged with speeding.

Gaetan Bong is accused of driving faster than the 70mph speed limit in his Land Rover on the A27 dual carriageway at Shoreham.

The 30-year-old will appear before Crawley Magistrates’ Court today to answer the charge, along with failing to tell the police about who was driving the Land Rover in December last year.

If guilty Bong, whose address in court papers is listed as Mash Barn Lane, Lancing, where the Albion training ground is, faces potential penalties including a driving ban, three or six points on his licence and a fine linked to his earnings.

The Cameroonian full back has made 69 appearances for the Seagulls since his move on a free transfer from Wigan Athletic in 2015.

He started his career at French side Metz in 2005, before playing for other French clubs Tours and Valenciannes during spells between 2008 and 2013, scoring three goals.

Then he moved to Greek giants Olympiacos for a spell between 2013 and 2015 before coming to England.

Previously he played for France at under 21 level and then for Cameroon at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. He has made a total of 12 appearances for his country.

Last month Bong announced he has come out of international retirement to play for Cameroon again.

Bong’s U-turn followed the appointment earlier in August of Clarence Seedorf as Cameroon’s head coach, with fellow former Dutch legend Patrick Kluivert as his assistant. This means he is on course to play for the holders and hosts in the Africa Cup of Nations next June.

Bong made his 75th appearance for Albion against Fulham at the Amex on Saturday.

He has won back the left-back spot from Bernardo since the Brazilian summer’s signing’s uncomfortable debut in the opening day defeat at Watford. Bong has enjoyed huge success since joining the club, first in the promotion winning season of 2016/17 and then when the club stayed in the Premier League.
