THE Argus has teamed up with the UK’s largest food redistribution charity to help people in need.

Our parent company Newsquest is working with FareShare, which helps to feed the most vulnerable people across the county.

Its Brighton offices are in Fairway Business Centre, Westergate Road, and it has a number of other regional depots.

Argus editor Arron Hendy said: “Thousands of people would go hungry each week if it wasn’t for FareShare rescuing good quality surplus food and giving it to charities in your area.

“Don’t be fooled, there really are thousands of people in need – hidden in your community, suffering quietly, debating whether to buy food or pay the power bill.

“It’s that serious for some people.

“But to do this FareShare needs many more volunteers.

“These are the food heroes, the ones sorting the food in your local FareShare regional centre, putting food orders together and delivering that food to many incredible frontline charities.

“You can be a food hero too – it doesn’t take much time and by volunteering just a few hours a day, you can make a massive difference.

“And not just in the warehouse – you could be speaking to charities, or pushing the word out on social media.”

Newsquest has formed a digital advertising partnership working with FareShare to spread the word.

Mr Hendy said: “Come on people, volunteer now and help these vulnerable people, who find themselves living in food poverty for all sorts of reasons.”

FareShare Sussex was established in 2002 by City Gate Community Projects.

The team redistributes surplus food to organisations, which feed vulnerable groups, within Brighton and Hove and the Worthing area.

A spokesman for the charity said: “Though Brighton is situated in the South East of England, the statistics for poverty, deprivation and homelessness outstrip the regional figures and a number of wards are in the most deprived five per cent of the country.

“Brighton also suffers with extremely high levels of drug addiction, consistently, recording the highest drug-related death rate in the country.

“Many of the volunteers at FareShare Sussex are recruited from the projects FareShare delivers to.

“Volunteers are provided with accredited training, support and structure to help improve their employment chances.

“We need your donations to redistribute good food that would otherwise go to waste to UK charities and community groups.”
