1. Park up in the lay-by beside the Roman Catholic Church at the end of School Lane. Follow the public footpath up Kithurst Lane.

When you reach a fork in the road with private driveways on either side, follow the public footpath through the narrow alley in between.

This would be easy to miss were it not for a hand-made wooden sign someone has helpfully put up to direct people.

Walk along the narrow footpath through the hedgerows until you reach a stile on your left.

Climb the stile and follow the well-defined footpath through the meadow, then climb the next stile and continue straight ahead.

At the gate turn right onto the lane and walk past Gerston Farm in the direction of the South Downs.

When you arrive at the fork in the road go right and begin climbing uphill. At Greyfriars farm the road forks again.

Go right here and follow the bridleway up towards Coldharbour Cottage and Barn. When you reach Coldharbour, turn left.

2. You will very shortly arrive at another fork in the bridleway. Take the left hand path up to the gate then almost immediately turn right into the woodland.

This path soon bends around to the left and is lined with tree roots which act as steps leading you steeply uphill.

Keep climbing and when you get to the top of the hill (well done!) the views open out and on a clear day you get dramatic views out over the South Downs and surrounding countryside.

After a quick stop to recuperate from the climb and admire the views, locate the cross roads signpost and follow the bridleway to the right which runs alongside the field.

At the end of this path you will arrive at the South Downs Way - go left here.

This is around the mid point of the South Downs Way, the 100 mile route which follows the old way across the Downs between Winchester and Eastbourne.

3. When you reach Kithurst Hill car park and Chantry Post turn left and follow the road downhill along Chantry Lane. At this time of year there is the opportunity to pick a blackberry or two along this stretch of the walk.

Follow the road for approximately a mile, continuing straight ahead and ignoring any footpaths off to the left.

As you reach a cluster of houses you will see a small stream that runs to the right of the lane. Walk a bit further along and you will come to a small waterfall shortly after the pond.

4. When you see a metal gate and a stile, just before the road curves round to the right, climb the stile and follow the footpath diagonally across the field. Go through to the next field and head to the left hand corner. Follow the footpath to the left of the houses then walk through the housing estate.

Keep walking until you reach a sign for a public footpath to your left, then turn left and continue walking straight ahead until you arrive at Greyfriars Lane.

Turn left here and follow the lane for a short distance before turning right just before the church on the hill. This church is Grade I listed and well worth a visit.

Follow this footpath back past the cemetery and along to the back of the Roman Catholic Church, the start and end point of the walk.
