SUPERSTAR DJ and Martlets ambassador Fatboy Slim has unveiled 15 of the 50 amazing giant snail sculptures to celebrities, artists and sponsors at Brighton Palace Pier.

Hundreds came to support the launch yesterday at Horatio’s Bar to support and generously donate to Martlets Hospice.

The trail, Snailspace, featuring all of the mighty molluscs, will hit the city from September 15 until November 18.

Martlets is asking everyone to take a leaf out of the snails’ book and make sure they take life at a leisurely pace.

Fatboy Slim, also known as Norman Cook, also brought along his giant snail, entitled Fast Forward The Mixtape Snail, which is designed by local artist the Cassette Lord.

Fatboy said: “I am looking forward to this year’s Snail Trail.

“It’s a really fun activity for everyone to participate in, and it promotes the fantastic work Martlets has done.

“I am very proud of my snail, and it’s obviously my favourite one.

“It will be on display at the Big Beach Cafe from Saturday.

“The Snow Dogs trail two years ago was an absolute success. This time, we have a clearer message we want to send to people.

“We are telling people to take life easier and slower like a snail. Everyone agrees this suits the Brighton outlook on life.

“In this world dominated by the rat race and the internet, we need to remind ourselves to be more laid back, take our time and stroll around and enjoy the finer things in life. Last time I went around the city with my daughter to find the Snow Dogs. We found 33 in one day and took some selfies. I encourage everyone to do the same and try to find your favourite one.”

Among the snails that were revealed were “Slimon” created by Turner nominated artist, David Shrigley and “Soraya” by artist and former fashion designer Sarah Arnett.

Ms Arnett holds the accolade for creating the highest selling Snowdog “Max”, which sold for £22,000 during the Martlets’ Snowdogs by the Sea campaign in 2016.

Other snails featured included two giant ice-cream snails, Fabtastic and Scoopalicious, sponsored by one of Brighton’s most successful tech companies, Brandwatch.

YouTube sensation, Alfie Deyes, created “Sanderson” and crime author Peter James has a snail named “Nee Nor”.

Imelda Glackin, chief executive of Martlets, said: “It’s amazing to see the work artists have put in. We have 50 absolutely breathtaking snails across the city, and also 60 junior ones that will be joining the trail.

“At Martlets we work with people living with a terminal illness, and it’s an incredible privilege to work with them. You learn people can still feel hope, freedom, and purpose in life. They are also the people who truly understand what it’s like to live. We thank everyone for helping us continue with our work.”

Ms Arnett said: “I created Soraya in memory of my close friend who passed away from cancer earlier this year. I painted the snail with a fantasy garden theme because I’ve always had a fascination with the Pleasure Gardens. I made the snail red and black. I want it to be beautiful and exotic like Soraya. She was a very kind person who did a lot for charity, and she helped promote my Snowdogs.”

Artist Danni Smith, from Whitehawk, said: “I am very proud to have my snail displayed. The snail has all four seasons and different flowers on it. I chose the theme of bees because I want to remind people the important roles of bees. Some times we forget to appreciate the little things in life.”
