ALDI has confirmed its newest superstore will open on October 4.

The supermarket giant says the branch at the Pavilion Retail Park in Lewes Road, Brighton, would have a “modest” 1,100 square metres of sales space and would create up to 50 jobs.

Brighton and Hove City councillor for the area Michael Inkpin-Leissner said he will attending the opening.

He said: “It’s absolutely fantastic, my family is over the moon.

“In my ward, you get people who struggle with money.

“The store is affordable and so will be a big relief for students and families and the elderly.

“Aldi is going to be very successful and I think it’s going to put the pressure on Hollingbury Asda who always seem to be understocked and understaffed.

“Also, Aldi stock many German products, which for me is an added bonus.”

The new store would be in addition to Aldi’s existing supermarkets in London Road and Carlton Terrace, Portslade.

It will be less than half a mile along the road from rival chain Sainsbury’s and will be half the size.

Katie Wallace, 22, a student who lives in The Avenue nearby said she was “incredibly excited” about the new store.

She said: “It’s been such a long time coming, I just can’t waiting for the opening day to start shopping.

“I’ve been shopping at Aldi on London road for a while and have to travel there on the bus and lug all the shopping back.

“The new store is going to save so much time and money.

“It’s going to be so great.”

The plans for the Aldi at the Pavilion Retail Park were approved in March last year.

At the time, Aldi said it wanted to open the store as soon as possible.

The supermarket’s move

into the retail park is part of £6 million expansion plans first set out in 2016.

Aldi has more than 590 stores in the UK and employs more than 25,000 people.

The German chain of supermarkets has a combined turnover of more than £40 billion.

But not everyone is happy.

Jack Mulholland lives in the Lewes Road area and works in Brighton as a data analyst.

He said: “I don’t like the idea of foreign business undercutting British ones like Sainsbury’s.

“The food section isn’t great and their low prices of alcohol will encourage drinking in Lewes road which is notorious for this issue.

“My neighbours are students and this will only increase their volume.”
