ALBION are close to appointing a technical director, with England guru Dan Ashworth high on their list of preferred options.

Former West Brom sporting director Ashworth has been credited with helping turn England’s fortunes around at senior and junior level in his role as FA technical director.

The Seagulls would love to land the 47-year-old but acknowledge he could have the pick of several high-level posts if he decided to leave St George’s Park.

Albion have whittled down their search to a shortlist after interviewing candidates in the UK and overseas.

They want somebody who can speak English with a good knowledge of the English and global game and contacts around the world to help cope with the huge increase in the club’s football operations and technical staff.

The technical director will have a wide-ranging umbrella role with input into the academy, sports medicine and player recruitment.

The positions of manager Chris Hughton, head of recruitment Paul Winstanley, academy chief John Morley and head of medical services Adam Brett are unaffected.
