WE ALL have dreams of being rock stars, and now you can make that dream a reality.

The UK Air Guitar Championships take place tonight at the Prince Albert, Brighton.

Started in 1994, the competition is the oldest air guitar championship in the world.

Competitors from across the world will descend upon the city to pluck and riff their way to glory.

A staple in the arsenal of any rocker is the ability to pull of a great guitar solo.

To make the audience believe that you’re a master of the strings you have to be on top of your game.

And to be the winner you have to win over the wild crowd.

Colin Fulker, organiser of the UK Air Guitar Championships, said: “The audience are the judges, the person picks a track and performs.

“You’re trying to replicate a rock god, whoever that may be.

“We have a number of repeat offenders, Ace of Spaces, Sweet Home Alabama, a couple of heavier ones like Metallica. We try not to encourage songs with very long solos.”

With so many rocking tunes it’s easy to see why the championships have been so consistently popular.

Of course, crowd sizes vary depending on the popularity of music at the time, air guitar is a more rock and metal dominated art form.

The tournament begins with 90 second rounds where guitarists need to work their magic, before a head-to-head knock-out contest and even a cage round.

The routes of the competition also have deep seated routes in Brighton.

Colin said: “It’s always been in Brighton. We started out at what is now the Hope and Ruin.

“The contest nearly always comes back to Brighton.

“It’s a place where people are comfortable being themselves.”

Colin adds that normally you don’t even need to be an air guitar master and that it is more about the feeling that participants put into their skill.

He said: “Normally the loser is the biggest winner. You don’t need to be a good air guitarist but show people how passionate you are.”

The UK Air Guitar Championships grand final take place at the Prince Albert tonight, and anyone wanting to take part can show up at the time doors open and request to play.
