A MEMORIAL service for a cat that made its home at a crematorium will be held today.

The much-loved Ashley spent most of his 16 years and nine lives as an outdoor cat at Worthing Crematorium and the service will include songs from the musical Cats and the 1970s film The Aristocats.

“Ashley will be very much missed by all of us here at the Worthing Crematorium,” said Kate Greening, Worthing Borough Council’s bereavement services manager.

“Although his origins were unknown, he provided a significant amount of comfort to bereaved families and visitors as well as being a friendly and familiar face for our staff.

“We hope that this service will give those who knew Ashley the opportunity to say their goodbyes and give their tributes.”

Her colleague Tracy Kelly said: “Ashley was a very friendly, lovable cat. He was loved and cared for by the crematorium staff and members of the public.

“Ashley seemed to know instinctively who needed attention and comfort and he provided much solace and friendship to mourners at a low point in their lives.

“He was loved and cared for by the crematorium staff and members of the public.

“We have been heartened at the response we have received by many people sharing their amazing stories and photos of Ashley.

“He is truly missed by all of us.”

The service will be conducted by minister SarahJane Boden, who will give the welcome and prayers.

The service will feature poems and a section on remembering Ashley through sharing stories and memories.

“Among the songs to be played are Memory from Cats and Ev’rybody Wants To Be A Cat from The Aristocats.”

Everyone involved in the service is giving up their time free of charge.

The memorial service takes place at noon in the Muntham Chapel, Worthing Crematorium, today.

There will be a gathering before the service with refreshments provided from 11am.

Anyone who plans to attend is asked to email crematorium@worthing.gov.uk.
