A Lewisham primary school is celebrating as the doors to its new bright and vibrant library have been officially opened.

After months of planning over the summer holidays, St Saviour’s Primary School in Bonfield Road has seen a dull room now transformed into a colourful new space.

More than 2,500 books were donated to help stock it up while books tucked away in children’s rooms and parents’ attics were given a new home.

It was following a campaign run by estate agency the Acorn Group, ‘Books for St Saviour’s’, that the new library has been filled with a variety of literature now available to school pupils.

St Saviour’s Primary School headteacher Dean Houson said: “It’s just absolutely stunning, we will be using the new library space in a variety of different ways.

“Every class will have a weekly slot where they can borrow books to enjoy them at home. It’s going to help improve the children’s vocabulary and writing so much.”

Mayor of Lewisham Damien Egan officially opened the new library alongside Mr Houson, chair of governors Jo Chandler, and the Acorn Group chief executive Rob Sargent.

It also comes as the estate agency announces the next step in its community work.

Rob Sargent, the Acorn Group’s chief executive, said: “We know for sure that the local community wish to support projects of this type, so we’re going to take the opportunity to carry this forward now.

“We will keep the appeal for recycling and reuse of books going, and we’ll be looking at organisations that need our help and support in a similar way.

“It seems quite fitting that we have opened the St Saviour’s library and announced this ongoing initiative on the birthday of the late, great Roald Dahl. I’m sure he would have approved of what we have achieved here today.

“But this is only the beginning of the story.”
