THE air ambulance landed on the A23 after a car veered off the road.
The fire service attended the scene at 5.29pm on Thursday and pulled a woman from an overturned car.
The southbound carriageway between Warninglid and Bolney was closed to allow the helicopter to land, causing severe delays.
They said: “A23 Sussex is closed southbound between B2115 Warninglid and A272 Bolney due to a car which has left the carriageway.
“Northbound traffic stopped to allow an air ambulance to land."
Pictures from the scene show at least four fire engines, three ambulance vehicles and several police cars.
An ambukance service spokesman said: "At 5.25pm we sent two cars and an ambulance when a car collided with a lamppost on the A23 near Bolney.
"The car had also rolled and was on its roof.
"Fire arrived to extricate the patient.
"The air ambulance team accompanied the patient, who was taken by road ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, for treatment for a head injury."
