IT isn’t every day a 15th century manor house is brought to life with lasers.

But for three nights from tonight, Firle Place, near Lewes, will be lit up in a 3D light and sound production called The Light Fantastic.

The show tells the story of the manor and wider Sussex, from prehistoric times through to the present day.

Firle Place, the family home of the 8th Viscount Gage, will act as the backdrop for the imagery and period theatrical performances, between today and Sunday.

Over the course of the hour-long show the audience will travel through time, stopping at various points in history such as the Roman Empire, the Battle of Lewes and the two world wars.

Francis Burrows, production director at Crown Events, which is putting on the show, said: “We are bringing history to life.

“Myself, the creative director Bob Mayston and our writer, David Arnold, who writes a history column, all live in the Lewes area and we wanted to find a castle or stately home to put on a show.

“I think people will be amazed at what they see and enjoy learning about the history.

“Think Proms in the Park, and bring your lightweight chairs, a table, a candelabra, a picnic and a bottle of wine.”

Narrating the story will be actors Rula Lenska, Michael Jayston and Nicola Ravenscroft.

Classical singer Josh Newlyn will be serenading people to their seats before the show and there will be catering on site, including prosecco served from a vintage Volkswagen camper van.

Michael Jayston, 83, who lives in Hove, said: “It’s going to be a fantastic evening, the history of Firle is fascinating.

Bob Mayston, creative director for Crown Events, said: “As well as opening the manor house and grounds to the general public, Firle Place offers a number of events to visitors throughout the year.

“We’ve worked closely with Lord Gage and his estate team to create an unusual spectacular.

“It will be informative whilst having the wow factor.

“We go way beyond what you would think of as a son et lumiere production.

“Our show is something just that bit different.”
