A pensioner was seriously injured after he was run over on a dual carriageway.
The man in his 70s had broken down in his maroon coloured Humber Snipe on the A24 near Washington, north of Worthing.
He was trying to cross the carriageway on foot when he was hit by a blue Volkswagen Golf shortly after 7.30pm on Friday.
Police closed the road to carry out an inquiry until 12.40am on Saturday.
Paramedics took him to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, where he remains in a critical but stable condition.
Now police have appealed for any witnesses who may have seen what happened to come forward.
Information can be reported to Sussex Police online or by calling 101 and quoting Operation Glandore.
