ENVIRONMENTAL campaigners have said the latest UN report on climate change should be a “wake-up call”.
Green group Divest East Sussex has delivered the “Global Warming of 1.5 degrees Centigrade” report at County Hall in Lewes. The report read: “Limiting global warming to 1.5C, compared with 2C, could reduce the number of people both exposed to climate-related risks and susceptible to poverty by up to several hundred million by 2050.” The group is calling on the county council to halt the East Sussex Pension Fund investing in fossil fuel industries.
Campaigner Hugh Dunkerley said: “We’ve already seen global warming of more than one degree centigrade, and climate change is now leading to increasingly severe impact – from rapidly melting sea-ice at the poles to 50 degree heatwaves in India and drought in California.”
