THE theme of the Martlets charity’s Snailspace trail is one of slowing down and appreciating what is around us.

And what better way to do this than walking 26 miles around Brighton and Hove and visiting each one of the 50 sculptures on the way?

That is exactly what DJ Norman Cook will be doing to raise money for the Martlets hospice, as he ditches his Fatboy Slim moniker for the day in favour of Fatboy Slow.

He will be starting at his Big Beach Cafe at Hove Lagoon in the morning, and hoping to finish at the Martlets hospice at 8.20pm.

You can follow his mission on our live blog on The Argus website throughout the day.

Norman said: “I was thinking about a fundraising challenge I could take on as part of the Snailspace campaign.

“When Brighton had Snowdogs a few years ago my daughter Nelly and I did the whole trail, but we cheated a bit by going by car and we spread it over two days.

“So, completing the whole trail in one day was an obvious idea, and, as I’m a little bit of a runner and as the distance is about 26 miles, I thought about a marathon taking in every snail.

“But, as I started thinking about the whole #BeMoreSnail idea, taking things at your own pace, I thought hang on, let’s not run it, let’s walk it.

“The more I thought about it the more I wanted to embrace the idea of slowing down.

“By walking it is a far more sociable affair, I can get a selfie at each snail, chat to people as I’m walking, and can really embody the motto of #BeMoreSnail.

“I’m really hoping people will sponsor me ahead of the challenge and on the day.

“So, one day, 26 miles and 50 snails – let’s do this.”

A guided meditation session on the British Airways i360 is taking place tomorrow morning from 9.45am, led by Snailspace’s headline sponsor Brandwatch.

For a £10 donation to Martlets, participants of the sky-high meditation will get to take in the impressive views on the way up, before participating in a ten-minute guided meditation at the top.

Other city wide events and activities include afternoon tea, complete with a snail cake made by Choccywoccydoodah, yoga and a lunchtime walk at the Martlets hospice in Hove, and snail quilt workshops at Brighton Sewing Centre.

Clarkes of Sussex stationers, in Bond Street, Brighton, will be holding an art and craft event where cotton shopper bags can be decorated in return for a £3 donation to Martlets.

Employees of Austin Rees and Graves, Son and Pilcher will be getting mini massages and the companies will lead a lunchtime meditation at the Old Steine.

Loch Associates have a pop-up selfie photographer snapping pictures of anyone passing by their snail, Saffron, in Steine Gardens between 11am and 2.30pm.

Nurseries, schools and youth groups are getting involved, with many, such as Hove Park School, Carlton Hill Primary School and Each Peach Childcare, hosting special events and non-uniform days.

Downs Infant School is hosting a Darwinist walk, a special assembly and mindfulness activities.

Martlets shops will also be entering into the spirit of the day and aiming to spread the #BeMoreSnail message with stickers and sweets at the till points, snail pictures to colour in and mindfulness messages around the walls.

But the beauty of #BeMoreSnail day is that everyone can get involved, wherever they are, be that at home, work or school.

You can do anything that encourages you to slow down and create moments of calm and enjoyment.

It could be as simple as taking a proper lunch break, enjoying a bath, running a mindful lunchtime session of yoga or colouring, or changing your commute to include walking or cycling.

You could turn your mindful activity into a fundraiser for Martlets, for example getting sponsored for every hour you stay on your digital detox or charge £5 for a meditation session.

Whatever you do, you will be engaging with a campaign that delivers life-changing care to Martlets’ terminally ill patients and their families.
