THE first store in the new £85 million extension of the Eastbourne Arndale Centre has opened.

More than 1,000 shoppers queued for the store opening at H&M when staff performed a celebration dance and a ribbon was cut.

Shoppers queued for around an hour to get into the store, based over two floors, and were given a 25 per cent discount wristband to redeem against purchases that day.

The first 200 customers also received an exclusive goody bag.

Founded in Sweden in 1947, H&M opened its first UK store in 1976.

Forty years later, it has more than 264 stores.

Andrew Rice, fund manager at Legal & General, said: “It was fantastic to see H & M open in Eastbourne, the first of many new retailers who will be coming to the town.

“With more dynamic brands opening their doors to the public soon, we can’t wait to see the public enjoy the benefits the extension will bring to Eastbourne.”

Council Leader Councillor David Tutt said: “It was a momentous day.”
