SIX people were rescued after their boat sank in Littlehampton Harbour.

Emergency services were called at about 8am this morning after receiving reports of a 27ft fishing vessel crashing into the entrance of the harbour.

The boat sank and left six people stranded in the water. HM Coastguard and the coastguard helicopter in Lee-on-Solent, Littlehampton RNLI lifeboat crews, Littlehampton Coastguard, Sussex Police and ambulance were involved in the rescue.

The casualties were taken back to the lifeboat station and they received medical treatment from paramedics.

A spokesman from Littlehampton RNLI lifeboat said: "We were called to reports of a sunken vessel with six people stranded in the water.

"The rescue was successful and the casualties are all fine and they didn't require hospital treatment."

A spokeswoman for the HM Coastguard said: "At 8:12am this morning we received an alert from a fishing vessel saying that they had come across a sunken vessel with six people in the water, just outside of Littlehampton Harbour.

"All six people were rescued from the water by the lifeboat and passing vessels. All the crew have been accounted for and have been passed into the care of the ambulance service."
