TODAY we salute two passionate residents of Hanover in Brighton.

Most of us have never heard of Tea Meneghetti and Alizée Staes.

Well, at least until today that was.

They have presented a petition signed by 3,161 people to Brighton and Hove City Council.

Their message: the council should be recycling a wider range of plastics as well as food waste.

How true that is, and let’s hope the councillors have listened to the pair.

It is, of course, shameful that the city council is ranked 326th out of 353 councils in the country.

That is an outrageous figure and Brighton and Hove City Council must do better.

I’m sure it realises that.

Well, let’s hope it does.

Miss Meneghetti spoke bluntly and quite right too.

She told councillors: “There is poor management of the system.”

We expect the council to do something about this, and quick too.

Miss Staes said: “Lots of people want to recycle but do not know how to do it.

“The council should be responding to educate people.”

And she’s right. The responsibility for this indeed does lie with the city council.

The Greens’ track record on recycling is hardly glowing but he was right to ask for “constructive and costed investigations” into what the petitioners were seeking at the meeting

Quite right too.

That’s enough talk. Now the city demands action and improvements, quickly.
