A HASSOCKS garden centre held its annual Charity Coffee Morning in aid of St Peter and St James’ Hospice.

Staff and customers at South Downs Nurseries raised a total of £1,084 in just a few hours.

“This was a massive increase on last year’s figure, and broke all records”, explained Sarah Mead from the family-run business.

Income for the hospice included fundraising by both representatives from the hospice and the garden centre, with all profits from hot drinks purchased during the morning being donated.

“Our success event was part of Tates of Sussex Garden Centres’ annual charity coffee Mornings which were held simultaneously across all three of our garden centres”, said Sarah.

Mayberry Garden Centre in Portslade supported The Martlets Hospice whilst Paradise Park at Newhaven raised funds for St Wilfrid’s Hospice.

The total raised across all three garden centres for the morning was in excess of £2,500.

The company prides itself on supporting charities throughout the year.

A spokesman said: “South Downs Nurseries and Garden Centre, based in Hassocks, is our largest centre.

“From our nurseries here, we grow many of the plants we sell in our three garden centres. Our plant area is one of the largest in Sussex and is supported by a dedicated team of plant experts.”
